UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea (재한유엔기념공원)
Chungnyeolsa Shrine (충렬사)
Chungnyeolsa is a shrine dedicated to the Koreans who died fighting against Japanese troops during the Imjimwaeran (Japanese invasion of Korea). In 1592 Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who unified feudal Japan, invaded Korea to expand Japan's territory and increase his own political power. Essentially, Dongnae was the first location where Korea resisted the invasion, despite being outnumbered and possessing inferior weapons. In total, 93 Koreans died fighting in the Dongnae Fortress.
In 1605, the original shrine (Songgongsa) was built at the South Gate of Dongnae Fortress by Governor Yun Hwon in remembrance of Song Sang-Hyeon. In 1624 another patriot, Jeong Bas, was enshrined and the shrine was renamed Chungnyeolsa. Finally, in 1652 Chungnyeolsa was moved to its current location. A lecture hall and several dormitories (Allakseowon) were built to ensure the history of the Dongnae fighters was taught to future generations.
Of the many places I visited along the "Dongnae History Walking Trail", Chungnyeolsa was by far the most impressive individual site. The history was fascinating and the mountain trail to the Eastern end of the Dongnae-eupseong Fortress was the most enjoyable nature walk of the trip.
