Thien Mu Pagoda (Chùa Thiên Mụ)

Thien Mu Pagoda, known as the Pagoda of the Celestial Lady, is a historic temple in the city of Huế on the Perfume River. Its iconic seven-story pagoda is regarded as the unofficial symbol of the city. It was originally built in 1601 on the order of the first Nguyễn lord Nguyễn Hoàng, and underwent many expansions and refurbishing. According to the royal annals, Hoang was told of the local legend in which an old lady, known as Thiên Mụ (ie. celestial lady) who prophesied that a lord would come and build a pagoda on the hill to pray for the country's prosperity. She then vanished after making her prophecy. Upon hearing this, Hoang ordered the construction of a temple at the site.

Similar to Seokbulsa in Korea, I have mixed feelings towards this temple. This was definitely a tourist site with little atmosphere. Still, I enjoyed the visit and learning about Chùa Thiên Mụ's role in Anti-government protests.

Check out my personal photos below. Enjoy!

After Quang Duc's self-immolation, his heart remained in-tact. His body was re-cremated  at his funeral, but his heart remained unburnt

About Me

안녕하세요! I'm Dr. Scott. I stand awkwardly in front of Korean history with my phone to capture an everlasting, fuzzy memory. I made this site for my friends and family in America, but you can enjoy it too.
